Political conversation doesn’t have to be about who can shout the loudest, insult the most, or make the other side look stupid.
Quite the opposite.
I think we need to get better at respecting each other even when we have completely different opinions.
We humans come from different backgrounds. We have different upbringings, experiences, life choices, and encounters with society. What is obvious to one person may be completely foreign to another. That doesn’t mean that someone is automatically right – but it does mean that there is a reason to listen before we judge.
In political debates, it’s easy to end up in an ”us and them” situation. You start to see the opposing opinion as a representative of a party or an ideology instead of as a person. Then the step to personal attacks, contempt, and hatred suddenly becomes very short.
But just because someone votes differently than I do doesn’t mean that person is evil, stupid, or less worthy.
And maybe we all need to be a little humble about something else:
None of us sits alone with the ultimate solution for our country’s future.
We may be convinced that our ideas are the best. We may argue passionately for them. We may want to change the country we live in in a certain direction. But that doesn’t mean we have all the answers.
Maybe we can sometimes be right – and sometimes wrong.
Maybe we can actually learn something from the person we were just about to dismiss.
Political debate should tolerate strong opinions. It should tolerate criticism, questioning and clear disagreements. But criticism of an opinion never needs to turn into hatred of a person.
I wish for a political debate climate where we can say:
”I disagree with you – but I respect your right to think differently.”
That’s not weakness.
That’s democracy.
And maybe it’s precisely when we stop trying to win every discussion that we start to understand each other better.
We don’t have to agree to show respect.
That should be a self-evident basis in every political conversation.
